Each year Northern Electric Cooperative and Basin Electric Cooperative provide a $500 and $1,000 scholarship respectively. The selection of the winners in based on SAT/ACT scores, grade point average, an application outlining high school/college honors, community and school activities, employment history, and future career goals, a short essay focused on an electricity or cooperative theme (new topic selected every year) and a written recommendation by a third party. The scholarship application can be downloaded at the link below. Scholarships must be postmarked by February 16th, 2015.

2015 Scholarship Winners:
The $1,000 scholarship recipient for 2015, Lucas Sternhagen, is a senior at Groton Area High School. He plans to attend the University of South Dakota and pursue a major in Computer Science. Lucas is very involved at Groton in many extracurricular activities, such as basketball, football, baseball, soccer, FFA, Natural Helper, and a volunteer for several organizations. His parents are Northern Electric members Craig and Jodi Sternhagen of Groton.
This year’s $500 scholarship was awarded to Madisyn Waage who attends Aberdeen Central High School. She plans on attending the University of South Dakota or Augustana College and pursuing a major in Medical Biology with Minors in Spanish and Chemistry. She is the daugther of NEC members Tom Waage and Barb Haas of Aberdeen. Madisyn is involved in Student Senate, SADD, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honors Society, cross country, basketball, track and field, and many other activities.
